Biographical / Historical
C. DeWitt Matthews was born in Alabama in 1912. He graduated from Samford University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He completed post-doctoral work at the universities of Chicago and Kansas. He was married to Ruth Matthews, and the couple had 4 children: Suzanne, David, Michael, and Donna. Dr. Matthews was pastor at Vineville Baptist Church in Macon from 1949-1959 before moving to be a professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1959-1977. He was also a columnist for the Macon Telegraph and News and a pastor at churches in Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, and Texas. C. DeWitt Matthews died on February 25, 1985, in Atlanta, Georgia.
