Henry Holcombe Tucker was a white man born in Warren County, Georgia, in 1819. He died in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1889. Tucker attended the University of Pennsylvania from 1834-1837 and Columbian College in 1838, receiving the B.A. degree. Tucker received honorary degrees of D.D. from Columbian College in 1860 and the LL.D. from Mercer University in 1876. He married Sarah O. Stephens in 1853 and had two children, Henry Holcombe Jr. and Henrietta. (Sarah Stephens was Tucker’s second wife; in 1848 he was married to Mary Catherine West, who died a few months after their marriage.)
Tucker taught for three years at Southern Female College and was ordained in 1851. He served as pastor of Alexandria Baptist Church in 1854, professor of belles-lettres and metaphysics at Mercer University from 1856 to 1862, editor of the Christian Index in 1866, president of Mercer University from 1866 to 1871, chancellor of the Georgia State University (University of Georgia) from 1874 to 1878, and finally, editor of the Christian Index in 1878.
Tucker preached during his entire career after his ordination. His sermons were described as striking and powerful deliverances. He wrote many pamphlets and sermons, as well as a book in 1868, The Gospel of Enoch.
