Scope and Contents

The Smith collection contains papers (photocopied) from the years 1872-1875. It includes Smith’s diary (1873-1875), newspaper articles (1873, 1875), correspondence (1874), a commencement address made by Smith at Mercer University (1872), and sermons. The originals are located at First Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia.

Biographical / Historical

Jacob Horace Smith was born in Dahlonega, Georgia, on February 6, 1852, to J. H. and Emilie Smith. According to his diary, the family moved to Atlanta in 1859 and remained there until 1869, except for eight months when they were “fleeing from the Yankies [sic].” He was baptized August 13, 1865, at First Baptist Church in Atlanta. He attended Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia from 1869 to 1871, but in 1871 he felt called to the ministry. He was licensed to preach at Rome Baptist Church in July 1871 and became a student at Mercer University to train for the ministry. He remained at Mercer two years but because of ill health was advised by his physician to move to the more temperate climate of Florida. Smith was ordained by the Rome Baptist Church in 1873. In 1874, this church appointed Smith their missionary in Florida. He was also pastor of several churches in Florida until ill health caused him to resign all but one. He died in Jacksonville, Florida, on April 13, 1875, as he was traveling home to Rome.
