Scope and Contents
The collection contains mostly letters between Peirce, his wife, and his parents (1812-83) while he was at Penfield. The letters discuss personal, family, and school matters. Most of these items are photocopies.

Biographical / Historical
Benjamin Osgood Peirce was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on September 26, 1812. Educated in the public schools of Beverly as well as the South Reading Academy, he received the A. B. from Waterville College in Maine in 1835. He married Mehetable Osgood Seccomb on June 15, 1841, and taught in New Hampshire before coming south to Georgia, where he was a professor of chemistry and natural philosophy at Mercer University from 1841 to 1847. The correct spelling of the family name is Peirce, not Pierce.
