Biographical / Historical
Andrew P. Montague, A.M., Ph.D., LL. D, the son of Rev. Howard Montague, was born on September 27, 1854, at Fountain Run in Essex County, Virginia. In 1881, he married May Christian of Richmond, Virginia, daughter of Judge Joseph Christian of the Virginia Court of Appeals. He published "The Selected Letters of Cicero" in 1890 and "The Selected Letters of Pliny" in 1893. Montague was elected president of Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1897, where he served until 1902. He went on to serve as president of Howard College in Birmingham, Alabama, from 1902 to 1912. He married Florence Wood in 1907. After his tenure at Howard College, he became president of Columbian College in Florida. In 1919, he came to Mercer University as professor of Latin and Public Speaking. In 1923, he was appointed dean and then vice president in 1924. In the wake of Dr. Rufus W. Weaver’s resignation in 1927, Montague was appointed acting president and served until July 1928. Montague died on December 3, 1928, in Panama City, Florida.
