Typescript Journal, January 1 – September 22, 1859 (Copy 2/2)
Scope and Contents
The Langley collection contains one item, the journal of Thomas E. Langley, written from January 1, 1859-December 29, 1860 in Fort Valley, Georgia. The journal contains accounts of routine, daily life, including Langley’s travels in middle Georgia to preach or visit family. Accounts are general, with few details, although he does mention names of churches, Baptist preachers he meets, etc. Three family members donated Langley’s 282-page journal to the Georgia Baptist History Depository in 1999. On March 17, 1860, Langley mentions reading on “various subjects now under discussion” by Baptists, and ends with “May the Lord grant peace to the denomination.” On July 4, 1860, Langley says “May the Lord save this union from rupture and bless this people abundantly – Amen.”
