However, sometimes\u00a0it is impossible to find items at no charge. This page\u00a0is an explanation of\u00a0charges that are involved in ILL and how\u00a0the library supports your research while remaining fiscally responsible and living within our budgeting framework.<\/p><p>As of the 2023-24 academic year, the University Library will pay up to $40 of any borrowing charges.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/article><\/div><\/div><footer class=\"row\"><\/footer>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c2d33d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c2d33d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Sources of Charges<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ea59574 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ea59574\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Shipping Charges<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b53a19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b53a19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Most libraries will simply pass along shipping charges. Those are only very rarely over $40. However, for large items from overseas, we may see exceptional shipping rates.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-110b7ce elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"110b7ce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Processing Charges<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-857b6ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"857b6ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Other libraries charge a processing fee.\u00a0We make every effort\u00a0to avoid institutions that levy processing\u00a0charges.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d2af53 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9d2af53\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Copyright Royalties<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7d5bda elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e7d5bda\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The main fee that we see in ILL is the copyright royalty charge.<\/p><p>Our interlibrary loan office operates under a policy known as the &#8220;rule of five.&#8221; This means that we are able to borrow five articles from the last five years of a journal at no charge. If we borrow six or more articles, those from the sixth onward are subject to copyright royalties.<\/p><p>How much are copyright royalties?\u00a0These are up to the publisher. Some are low per-page charges, while others have a flat fee per article, and still others charge a per-article fee plus a per-page charge.<\/p><p>To make charges more reasonable, we began a relationship with a vendor that provides a lower per-item charge. Our average copyright charge is under $40.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4b4825 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d4b4825\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What happens when there is a charge?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-222a622 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"222a622\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If we run into a circumstance where it costs us more than $40 to acquire an item, we will send you an email alerting you to the fact. We will tell you how much we expect to pay for a given item and how much the University Library is able to pay on your behalf. This leaves you with a choice:<\/p><ul><li>You can elect to pay the difference. We will place this charge on your library patron record, which you must pay before we will deliver your item. (Example: If it costs us $45 to deliver your item, we will pay $40, and you will need to pay the University Libraries $5. You may pay by Bear Card at the circulation desk or through the <a href=\"https:\/\/accounting-mercer.nbsstore.net\/\">Mercer eStore<\/a>.)<\/li><li>You can elect\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0pay.
